"I'm curious about how we move through this world. My paintings are representational of the subject, but not necessarily accurate to real life. I want to reflect the uncertainties and conflicts as well as the exuberance and joy of what it means to be in this world. There are barriers and obstructions that keep us distracted and stuck, and there are occasions that let us live by our own accord, unbounded, unhindered, clear and fluid, yet interconnected.
My most successful works seem to paint themselves, taking on a life of their own. If I become self-conscious, I get in the way and the process of painting becomes clogged. With human figures, my goal is to allow the paint to dictate the image. I value wrinkles and scars, where we bend, where we break, how we lose our power and how we gain it back again. Endless possibilities exist in the range between the extremes of how we live our lives. There are moments of grief and sorrow, as well as those of frivolity and whimsy.
I want my paintings to represent thoughts and feelings, but with less accuracy to form and color. As a result, the content of the paintings tend to be more abstract. The ideas push the images into focus, while still keeping the subject vague. I paint in broad, loose strokes, giving only small hints of posture and circumstance"
